Primate Specialist Volunteering

The Jaguar Rescue Center provides the opportunity to gain experience in the animal keeper field by participating in daily animal keeper activities, including animal husbandry, nutrition and enrichment.

Experience in working with primates. Candidates must be able to work as a team and outdoors in the warm and humid climatic conditions of the Caribbean. We are looking for a specialist not only on primates but also familiar with other animals like birds and mammals.

All applicants should be organized, self-motivated and have excellent people skills. This position is an in-depth program requiring a 6 days per week commitment for 6 months. Volunteers must be flexible with their schedule, and have the ability to work weekdays and weekends.

It is an unpaid position on a voluntary basis. Housing is provided. Meals, travel expenses, visas, insurances and transportation are the responsibilities of the volunteer.

Position Description: The selected candidate will work with primates and some other species of animals under the Major Biologist supervision. This includes the following species: spider monkey, white- faced monkey, howler monkey, sloths, wild cats, bird and reptiles. Volunteer duties may include:

  •  Animal enrichment
  •  Cleaning of animal enclosures
  •  Diet preparation and feeding
  •  Observing and recording animal condition, behaviors and responses
  •  Association and rehabilitation programs
  •  Support in rescues
  •  Animal medication following Chief Veterinarian instructions

  •   Experience working with primates preferred.
  •   Qualified applicants must be able to work in a team environment, able to work outdoors in the Caribbean hot and wet climate
  •   Volunteers need to have a recent TB test, tetanus, yellow fever and rabies vaccines and a health insurance valid in Costa Rica
  •   The applicant needs to demonstrate maturity, self-motivation, and an ability to follow direction
  •   First Aid/CPR certified preferred
  •   Healthy and in good shape
  •   Non smoker
  •   Driving license
6 days per week for 6 months. Daily schedule from 7:30am to 4:00pm
This is an unpaid position. The volunteer will be responsible for all transportation costs, personal health insurance, TB test and meals.
College credit is offered if desired; volunteer is responsible for obtaining necessary approvals from their university
We offer accommodation in an individual room in a four rooms house in the Jaguar Rescue Center, in Cocles. Shared kitchen and bathroom, common area and fiber optic. Meals are not included.
