Nursery Long Term Volunteer

We are looking for hardworking, mature, flexible and healthy volunteers for our Nursery. Preferably 21+ and independent

Number of places: 2

Workplace: We have 3 different areas on site

  •   Clinic: Sick, injured and/or quarantined animals + new arrivals.
  •   Baby Nursery 1: Delicate animals with round-the-clock care.
  •   Baby Nursery 2: Young animals in rehabilitation.

Minimum stay: 3 months

Professional skills: Veterinary assistants, Healthcare professionals, animal keepers or last courses students.

JRC rehabilitates injured, sick and orphaned animals and releases those who are restored to good health back to their natural habitat. With a focus on monkeys, sloths, other mammals, birds and reptiles the JRC provides veterinary services, round-the-clock care and comfort to animals that would otherwise be unable to survive in the rainforest or the sea of the Caribbean. In 2019 we received 746 animals.

As a long term volunteer at JRC you will be involved in all the aspects of the nursery. You will be part of a team of approx. 5-10 nursery volunteers and veterinary assistants. We expect that you have carefully given thought to, and are comfortable with, the sometimes stressful environment of working full time in a hospital, before applying for this position.

Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to:

  •   Cleaning enclosures and general cleaning of Clinic and Baby Nursery
  •   Correctly handling, weighing and logging weights of various species of animals
  •   Preparing bottles and food plates
  •   Feeding various species of animals
  •   General caretaking, healthchecking and observation of sick, injured and/or orphaned animals
  •   Assist in clinical examinations of various species of animals and general assisting the vet team, if needed
  •   Non Smoker
  •   89 days of stay (be aware that you can only stay 90 days as a tourist in Costa Rica)
  •   Trial period: 15 days.
  •   English is mandatory. Some level of Spanish is appreciated, but not required.
  •   TB test certificate from your country or certificate of being vaccinated against TB
  •   International health insurance
  •   Minimum age is 18 yo.
  •   Professional skills: Veterinary assistants, Healthcare professionals, animal keepers or last courses students.
  •   There is a one-time applicant processing donation fee of $350 when you are accepted as a long term nursery volunteer. Your payment contributes directly to the running costs of the organization. Volunteers will be expected to pay a non-refundable 50% at least 2 months before to arrival to confirm their placement. The remainder 50% has to be paid at least one month before. As JRC is reliant on these fees, we regret that these fees are non-refundable.
  •   Certificate of complete Covid vaccine AND additionally current negative antigen test within 72 hours prior to arrival (if you can´t get vaccinated prior to arrival, let us know to look at your individual case)

We offer accommodation in Jaguar Inn hostel, next to de JRC. The price for long term volunteers is $20/night

The program always starts on Monday at 11:00am in the Jaguar Rescue Center, in Playa Chiquita

Working hours:

You will spend your first week as a regular volunteer in the JRC. After that you will be introduced to the nursery.

On a normal schedule each volunteer has 2 full days off per week. The working days are usually from 7:30am to 4:00pm, but can vary. You will be expected to work until 5:00pm minimum 1 day a week and also be available for evening shifts when needed. Normal lunch breaks are 1 hours long in total.

On your days off you are free to explore the wonderful Caribe Sur area (Cahuita National Park, Puerto Viejo town, Bocas del Toro in Panama…)

Nursery Volunteering in Costa Rica

Jaguar Inn

We offer accommodation for our volunteers located next to the Rescue Center. Jaguar Inn is a beautiful new hostel designed for your comfort and convenience.

Bright exterior rooms with garden views and 4 single beds, quality mattresses, sheets, towel, large capacity locker, individual reading light and plugs to charge your electronic devices. All of them are ensuite with hot shower and include mosquito nets.

In the common area (El Rancho) you can relax and share experiences with your fellow travelers from all over the world sitting on the comfortable sofas. You can prepare your meals in the fully equipped kitchen: cutlery and utensils, stove, oven, microwaves. There are several supermarkets close by and you can store your food and drinks in the refrigerators.

Of course the wifi internet connection is included and for your added security, we have a night guard.

The price for our volunteers is $20 + taxes per night.
