The JRC Community Program: connecting conservation and community

A human-centered initiative

The JRC Community Program was created to share knowledge in a fair and accessible way. Launched in April 2022, it represents the most human project of the Jaguar Rescue Center, refl ecting our commitment to society, the environment, and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are proud to say that since the creation of the JRC Community Program, we have inspired and involved over 6,000 people.

Working closely with local schools, as well as with the local police, the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), the fi re department, the coastguard, neighbors, and community leaders, the program aims to actively involve the local population in conservation eff orts.

Why it matters

For wildlife and nature
The animals living at the sanctuary are powerful testimonies of the impact of human activity on wildlife. Through their stories, the program raises awareness about biodiversity loss and the importance of protecting natural ecosystems.

For the local community
The JRC Community Program promotes inclusion and active participation by creating a trusted and familiar environment where communities feel encouraged to engage. The JRC acts as a guide and a pillar of support, strengthening local involvement in conservation.

For future generations
By working closely with local schools from an early age, the program transmits essential conservation values to children. This long-term educational approach empowers younger generations to become agents of change within their families and communities.

Education at the core
Education is a key pillar of the initiative. Through educational tours at the sanctuary, school visits, and community workshops, the JRC shares knowledge and fosters a deeper understanding of wildlife and biodiversity conservation.

Strengthening the link with the JRC
The program strengthens the bond between the Jaguar Rescue Center and the local population, reinforcing shared values such as cooperation, sustainability, integrity, and equity. This growing network allows the JRC to spread its conservation message both locally and internationally.

Actions on the ground

Concrete actions are at the core of the program:

  • - Educational visits at the sanctuary: 1,353 visits recorded, including 1,081 children and 272 adults, involving schools, institutions, and community groups.
  • - Community action initiatives (2025): We organize and conduct talks and educational workshops addressing topics based on the community's interests and needs. We held 45 sessions with a total of 765 attendees.
  • - Environmental impact: Approximately 70 kg of solid waste was collected through community clean-up actions.

Looking ahead
Through education, collaboration, and concrete action, the JRC Community Program plays a vital role in building a more informed and sustainable future. In 2026, the program aims to expand its reach and empower even more people to take action for wildlife and habitat conservation.
