More than 700 Wild Animals Rescued So Far in 2026

As we move through 2026, the Jaguar Rescue Center has been busy every single day.

Every day brings new emergency calls, new rescues, and new patients arriving at our Wildlife Hospital. Behind every rescue is a team of veterinarians, biologists, wildlife keepers, and volunteers working tirelessly to give Costa Rica's wildlife a second chance.

More than 700 Rescues So Far This Year

By the end of July 2026, we had rescued over 700 wild animals in need of urgent care. April was our busiest month, with 137 rescues, an average of more than four new patients arriving every day.

From tiny bats weighing only a few grams to powerful ocelots, every animal receives individualized care, rehabilitation, and the opportunity to return where they belong: the wild.

Of the 700 animals rescued so far this year:

● 29% have already been released back into the wild
● 23% are still receiving care and rehabilitation
● 48% sadly did not survive their injuries or illness

While every release is a reason to celebrate, these numbers also remind us how critical it is for wildlife to receive immediate professional care. Many animals arrive with severe injuries or conditions that are simply too advanced to overcome.

The Animals We Rescue Most

Sloths continue to be the species we rescue most frequently. Whether they are newborn babies, curious juveniles, or injured adults, sloths constantly need our help.

But they are far from the only ones. Throughout the year, our Wildlife Hospital has also welcomed monkeys, birds, reptiles, sea turtles, bats, and many other native species, all arriving for different reasons but sharing the same need: a second chance.

Why Do These Animals Need Help?

Behind every rescue is a story.

The most common reasons animals arrive at the Jaguar Rescue Center include:

● Injuries or illness
● Falling from trees
● Being orphaned
● Dog or cat attacks
● Being kept illegally as pets

Many of these situations are preventable. Through wildlife rescue, veterinary care, education, and conservation programs, we work not only to save individual animals but also to reduce the threats they face in the future.

Every Rescue Matters

The growing number of rescues reflects both the increasing pressures wildlife faces and the trust local communities place in the Jaguar Rescue Center when an animal needs help.

In 2025 alone, we rescued 1,429 wild animals, making it one of the busiest years in our history. With more than 700 rescues already before the end of July, 2026 is once again proving to be another demanding year for our team. Every rescue requires emergency transportation, veterinary care, medications, specialized diets, rehabilitation, and, whenever possible, a safe return to the wild.

None of this would be possible without the support of people who believe every wild animal deserves a second chance.
