Sloth new national symbol

On July 1st the sloth became a national symbol here in Costa Rica.

The purpose is to strengthen the importance of the 2-finger sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) and 3 finger sloth (Bradypus variegatus) species here as Costa Rican wildlife.

With this initiative, the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) will be responsible for the adequate conservation of sloth populations existing in Costa Rican territory and for the protection of the natural habitat of this species.

In addition, this law will help coordinate the regulation of speed limits for different means of transportation in the proximity of areas where there is an abundant movement of sloths, both in the surroundings of protected areas, as well as outside of them.
