At the end of February on late night, our team received an urgent call from the fire department about an ocelot that had been hit by a car in Limón.
When he arrived, his condition was critical. He had a cut on his mouth, internal bleeding, and was struggling to breathe. He was immediately sedated so our veterinary team could perform a full examination and begin emergency treatment. That night, our team worked tirelessly to stabilize him, stitch his injuries, and place him on IV fluids.
His condition was so severe that we weren’t sure he would survive the night. But this ocelot had other plans. He fought. By the next day, he was awake and alert, already showing us the resilience that would define his recovery journey.
The road to recovery
For the first several weeks, he remained in a quarantine enclosure at our hospital under constant observation. Our veterinary team closely monitored his breathing, healing progress, and eating habits, ensuring his body was recovering while also carefully evaluating his natural behavior.
After more than a month of care, he was strong enough to move into a larger rehabilitation enclosure designed to help him rebuild the physical skills he would need to survive back in the wild.
With large branches, climbing opportunities, and environmental enrichment, this new space allowed him to regain confidence and agility. From the moment he entered, he showed us exactly what we hoped to see: curiosity, alertness, and the instincts of a true wild cat. Every careful movement, every climb, and every watchful observation was another step closer to freedom.
What´s next?
He is still in our rehabilitation area, where he continues to grow stronger each day. The next step in his journey will be one final full medical check-up to ensure he is healthy and truly ready for life back in the wild. During that exam, our veterinary team will also place a microchip as part of his release preparation.
Until then, he will remain in rehabilitation, building strength and maintaining his wild instincts while we prepare for the day he can finally be released into a protected area, far from danger and back where he belongs.
